Year 2010 |
May
FIAP, together with the Chilean AFP Association, organized the 2010 FIAP International Seminar called Developing the Potential of the Individually Funded Pension Systems . This Seminar took place on May 6 and 7, 2010 at the Sheraton Miramar Hotel, located in the City of Viña del Mar, Chile.
The main purpose of the Seminar was to identify means and instruments whereby the pension fund managers can broaden their current efforts for solving the pension problem and furthermore, extend them to other areas of interest so as to improve the quality of the population s social security protection.
There was three approaches for meeting this objective. In the first place, different ways were explored in which the individually funded programs can extend their coverage to sectors of the population that are not currently engaged in pension saving or are doing so through other types of vehicles that are less appropriate for providing an effective solution to the pensions issue. Secondly, ways were explored whereby the pensions industry can take advantage of its experience and capacity for attending to other social needs of the population. Finally, organization and process alternatives that enable improving the operational management and effectiveness of the industry were analyzed.
The seminar had a practical focus aimed at highlighting the characteristics and the results of concrete experiences that could serve as a reference for fund management companies, legislators and supervisors for innovating and improving their own processes and regulations.
This is why the invited speakers presented concrete cases of policies, products and management and organizational models that were useful to those attending for identifying new opportunities and encouraging them to revise the way in which they regulate or manage their respective agencies. Furthermore, dialogue between the audience and the speakers and discussion between them were especially encouraged.
This seminar coincided with FIAP s Annual Assembly and was the eighth of a series beginning in 2002. As on former occasions, more than 200 participants from different countries worldwide attended the conference (FIAP members and others), including government authorities, members of parliament, officers of international agencies, representatives of pension fund managers and other personalities related to the social security sphere.

The International Federation of Pension Fund Administrators, FIAP, and the Colombian Association of Unemployment and Pension Fund Managers, ASOFONDOS, organized the Third FIAP/ASOFONDOS International Congress "The global recovery process: a view from the Private Pension Systems", which was held on April 15th and 16th 2010 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
This third version of the International Congress aimed at promoting knowledge of the individually funded systems and their historical performance. It also aimed to generate opportunities for analyzing the global crisis, the global economy recovery process and its impact on Latin America, the discussion on the viability and pertinence of the pensions industry for investment in infrastructure and the prospects for the development of private capital funds in Latin America.
On this occasion we were honored with the presence of the candidates to the presidency of the Republic of Colombia who put forward their public policy proposals for the pension system, the labor market and other issues of national interest in a climate of health discussion and debate.
The President of the Republic, Doctor Alvaro Uribe, closed the event.
